Survey of Brisbane and Cary Residents

To find out more about water conservation measures in Cary, NC, USA, Brisbane, Australia, and other parts of the world, we decided to do an on-line survey.

About the Survey

After testing a paper survey with 40 respondents in Cary, NC, we created an on-line survey using Survey Monkey. The survey was tested by "water" professionals, home owners, and other students in both Brisbane and Cary. A list of the people who helped is listed on our Thank You!!! page.

The final version was open for participation for 2 weeks, from October 20 to November 3, 2008.

News about the website was spread throughout Cary and Brisbane by:

   * handing out business cards with the website printed on them to neighbors and friends
   * announcements on homeschool email lists both in NC and in QLD
   * email announcements to friends, family and co-workers
   * word being passed to Water Block Leaders in Cary, NC
   * word being passed via a First Lego League coordinator in Brisbane, AUS

COACH'S NOTE: Because of the way this survey was conducted, there was a bias in the sampling. First, there was a technology/education/income bias: only those who had access to the Internet/email and checked their email on a regular basis could fill out the questionnaire. Second, due to the word-of-mouth method of getting information spread, this sample may not be representative of the population as a whole in each city with respect to the interest in the environment. No demographics were collected other than age so the bias is unknown.
