SURVEY RESULTS: Water Use in the Bathroom

Two questions were asked about water use in the bathroom.


  • One question asked a series of bathroom water-related activities to find out how often respondents did them (Every time / Often / Sometimes / Almost Never or Never / Not Applicable).
  • Another question asked about specific bathroom technologies that respondents may or may not use.



Summary of Water Use in the Bathroom: Conservation Activities


  • For every conservation practice we asked about, they were done more frequently by Brisbane residents than Cary residents.
  • The greatest difference was in the area of checking and repairing leaks with Brisbane done by 57% and 33% doing so in Cary
  • The smallest difference was seen in not flushing the toilet after each use.

Summary of Water Use in the Bathroom: Technologies


  • The most common technology in the bathroom was low flow shower heads with 50% of Cary respondents and 76% of respondents from Brisbane stating they have this technology.
  • Low flush toilets were present in 50% of homes in Cary and 35% of Brisbane respondents but dual flush toilets were used by 73% of the Brisbane residents compared to only 3% of the Cary residents (NOTE: Dual flush toilets were invented in Australia)
  • Timers for the shower were also used significantly more in Brisbane than in Cary.
