SURVEY RESULTS: Water and the Community

We asked people about water and the their local community....

  • First, we asked whether or not their city had limits on water use and then whether or not they felt their city/town's limits were too strict, just right or not strict enough.
  • We also asked how concerned residents were about their community's water supply in 5 years, 10 years, and in the long run. The concern level was also compared over the 3 time periods.

Summary of Water Use in the Community

      • In response to limits on water use per day, most Brisbane residents reported the limit as 140-170 liters (37-45 gallons. Most Cary residents were uncertain of current limits.
      • Most respondents in both Brisbane and Cary felt that water restrictions were about right, though over 25% of respondents from Cary felt that restrictions should be increased.
      • Brisbane respondents were more concerned about their community’s ability to meet short term water needs than the respondents from Cary. However, the concern about the ability for communities to meet future water needs increased over time for all respondents.

Is there a limit on how much water your family can use per day, determined by your city or town?

Limits on Water Use

  • Most Brisbane residents reported the limit was 140 liters (37 gallons) per person per day; some reported that the limit was 170 liters (45 gallons) per day. The limit had actually been changed shortly before the survey was conducted due to the drought situation getting somewhat less critical.

  • Most of the Cary residents were uncertain of current limits. Some talked about alternate day watering.
