SURVEY RESULTS: Gray Water and Water Meters

We asked people about the use of gray/grey water and water meters.

  • For gray water, we asked if people knew whether or not it was legal to use gray water in their community and whether or not they had a gray water system.
  • For water meters, we asked if people knew how to read their water meters, and if they did, how often they checked them.

Summary of Gray Water Use

  • More than half the respondents (66%) in Cary were not sure if gray water use is legal.
  • More than half the respondents in Brisbane knew that gray water use in Brisbane is legal.
  • Although gray water use is illegal in North Carolina 8% of Cary respondents said they had a gray water system.
  • 42% of the Brisbane respondents had a gray water system.

Summary of Water Meter Use

  • Those who checked their water meters were most likely to do it monthly in both Cary and Brisbane.  (17% in Cary and 13% in Brisbane)
  • Of those who checked their meters yearly more lived in Cary than in Brisbane.
  • An interesting fact pointed out to us by a survey respondent in Brisbane is that until the 1990's most residences in Brisbane did not have individual water meters.
